Newells Old Boys eliminate Boca Juniors from Copa Libertadores after 13 rounds of penalties

Newell's Old Boys faced Boca Juniors in the second leg of an all-Argentine Copa Libertadores quarter-final on Wednesday evening, with the aggregate score 0-0 after both games. Fans who may have felt cheated by the lack of regular-time action were then treated to a marathon shootout that lasted for thirteen rounds.

Boca legend Juan Romn Riquelme stepped up to take the first one, but put it straight into the keeper's hands, with coach Larry David Carlos Bianchi looking on in dismay. Newell's defender Marcos Cceres evened it up by completely missing the target in the fourth round, and both teams went into sudden death with the score at 3-3.

By the time ten rounds had past with each side missing three times by that point Riquelme had to step up to take a second spot kick (Boca had a player sent off during the match, so only ten from each side were allowed to participate and Newell's had to leave someone out). The 34-year-old vindicated his earlier miss, but two rounds later his teammate 'Burrito' Martnez failed to convert. Hence, the six-time Libertadores champions were sent packing by a score of 10-9, with Leo Messi's favorite side progressing to the semi-finals.
