Bryan Robson blasts Manchester City over Paul Scholes and says stick to your principles
Football Legends Denis Law and Bryan Robson at Old Trafford
Bryan Robson today re-ignited the war of words between Manchester United and Manchester City joining Sir Alex Ferguson in slamming Roberto Mancinis decision to recall Carlos Tevez.
The former United and England captain also hit out at Patrick Vieiras claims that Paul Scholes retirement U-turn was a sign of the Premier League champions weakness.
Scholes has been in hot form since making his comeback in January after hanging his boots up at the end of last season and is recognised as a prime reason why the Reds have overtaken City at the top of the table.
City broughtTevez back from exile after the Argentine striker was suspended and fined for his refusal to follow Mancinis orders at Bayern Munich in September.
Robbo said: Even trying to compare Paul Scholes with a Tevez, with the character that Scholes is, is just a nonsense.
Not wanting to play and going off to Argentina for months was bad for football, bad for City and for the fans. He let everybody down.
Tevez made an apology to City after his public fall-out with Mancini and failure to secure a move away from the Etihad Stadium in January and made a triumphant return in the crucial 2-1 win over Chelsea last week, setting up Samir Nasris winner.
Manchester United legend Steve Bruce fires out warning to City as title race reaches its climax
But Robson says City should have held firm with their stance.
As a manager you make a stance if a player lets you down b! ig style and then lets you down even more by going home and doesnt want to play, he said.
At the time City were seven or eight points clear and everybody was saying, We dont really need him anyway, so he can go off back to Argentina.
Now that some of the forwards have lost form and are not playing as well as they were and City are slipping up in games, now all of a sudden its right to bring Tevez back.
If you say he will never play for the club again if that is your principle then thats what your principle should be.
The City-United mind games stepped up a gear last week with Vieira riling Ferguson by questioning Scholes return.
And Robson who joined Denis Law to kick-off the countdown to Cancer Research UKs night-time walking marathon Shine believes Scholes has been justified in playing again.
I told him not to retire too early because the best part of your career are your playing days, said the legendary midfielder, who was diagnosed with throat cancer last year.
Youve only got to look at the way hes played since he came back to see it was the right decision.
