Manchester United's Michael Carrick reveals confusion over Athletic Bilbao's third goal
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has admitted the Reds were expecting Athletic Bilbao to kick the ball back to them after play was stopped when Patrice Evra's boot came off.
Old Trafford was left shell-shocked when the Spanish visitors raced to a 3-1 lead following a bizarre decision by referee Florian Meyer.
The German official awarded a last minute free kick to Bilbao when Evra played the ball despite losing his boot.
The Spanish side immediately took advantage with Oscar de Marcos forcing a save from David de Gea, which Iker Muniain converted.
Wayne Rooneys injury penalty gave United a life-line going into next weeks clash at the San Mames Stadium, but the Premier League champions still trail 3-2.
Michael Carrick admitted he was stunned by the third goal insisting United thought Bilbao would play the ball back to them.
Their third goal was a strange one, said the midfielder. The referee had told us they were kicking it back to us so we stopped and they scored.
We got the penalty straight back, but theirs counts for a little bit more being the away goal.
The referee didnt need to stop play when the Frenchmans footwear came off and when he incorrectly did, could have restarted play with a drop-ball.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguison described it as bizarre and Carrick added: Its the first time Ive seen one like that. They did say they were going to give us the ball back.
Carrick added: It was going to be tough going there anyway next week. We have given ourselves a big challenge, but we will be up for it.
We are disappointed to lose the game. Going forward at times we looked quite dangerous, but they had a lot of chances a lot of attempts. Thats not lik! e us. We are not happy at all.
We didnt underestimate them at all. We were well aware of how good they are and what threats they had. We just didnt do well enough at times.
Our overall performnce wasnt quite good enough.
The game was never going to be dead tonight. We knew it was going to be a two-legged affair and wed have to perform over there. Weve done it before. Our away form is very good and it will have to be next week.
