Euro 2012: England 1 Ukraine 0

Wayne Rooney celebrates his goal

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney scored as England defeated Ukraine to finish top of Euro 2012 Group D and set up a quarter-final clash with Italy.

Roy Hodgson's men withstood early pressure and took the leadon 48 minuteswhen returning Rooney headed in from close range after Steven Gerrard's right wing cross found its way to the far post.

Ukraine might have levelled but Marko Devic's effort, which was deflected off Joe Hart and then hooked clear by John Terry, was not given despite replays suggesting it crossed the line. There was a question mark over offside in the build up to Devic's effort though.
