Sir Alex Ferguson's eyeing up a New Year revolution

Celtics Victor Wanyama, Blackpools Tom Ince (top inset), and Borussia Dortmunds Robert Lewandowski (bottom inset) are all being watched by United
It's 17 years since Sir Alex Ferguson wrote down the name Ince on a United team sheet. Could the Reds boss be penning the same surname in his starting XI from 2013 onwards?

Thats one of the future possibilities as United undergo their groundwork for potential January transfer window business.

Paul Ince last played for United in the 1995 FA Cup final defeat to Everton. He left Old Trafford for Inter Milan in controversial circumstances as Fergie grew angry with the self-styled Guvnor.

The engine-room powerhouses son Tom was three-years-old at the time but has now grown into a goalscoring midfielder-cum-left winger of some note and influence
himself.

The 20-year-old is inspiring Blackpools efforts to regain Premier League status and is Ian Holloways top scorer in the Championship with six goals.

The Reds have shown interest in adding Stockport-born Ince to their stock of young midfielders to go alongside summer recruit Nick Powell from Crewe.

There remains a questions mark over the future of Nani, and Ince junior is building a scoring pedigree and attacking sense wide and centrally.

If United are to cash in on the Portuguese winger then around 6m of it could go towards bringing in the new Incey.

Holloway accepts hes preparing Ince for a big-money switch at some point and believes hes already as good as Arsenals England pair Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

I dont think the other two flying wingers (Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott) are any better than him, said Holloway.

Incey has been creating and scoring. In other words, if Arsene Wenger bough! t him, h ed be good enough to start for England. I cant keep anybody. I am working with them to get them to a Man United or Arsenal. Thats what I want to do for these boys.

United fans continue to urge Fergie to sign up a powerful midfielder to anchor the Reds and also a creative player, despite Wayne Rooneys recent success in the latter role.

Darren Fletcher has made a welcome comeback following his chronic stomach illness but admits it is going to be a constant battle with the problem. So a mid-season swoop for a steely midfielder and/or someone with vision could be on the cards.

United boss Fergie has always looked to get value for money with his purchases by targeting newcomers who can play in more than one position.

Two players who tick the versatile boxes are Celtics Victor Wanyama and PSV Eindhovens Kevin Strootman.

They also fit the bill age wise with Fergie always keen to add to the younger crew.

Kenyan Wanyama is 21 and has been impressing for Celtic in the SPL which has alerted United. The powerful player is a defensive midfielder but can also play in the centre of defence.

United still have issues at the back with Nemanja Vidics cartilage op quickly following his cruciate knee ligament injury last season.

Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have both been prone to a number of injuries in the last 12 months.

Jonny Evans had ankle surgery at the start of the summer and though Rio Ferdinand is managing his back and groin problems well, he will be 34 next month.

Wanyama would certainly be another potential candidate to strengthen a department that has been tottering due to the continuing injury crisis.

PSVs Strootman has been on Uniteds watch list for over 12 months since making an impact at the Dutch club. Hes also established himself in the Holland side with 11 caps and his power and vision in midfield is attracting many suitors.

And the 22-year-olds agent has indicated he could be up for grabs in January.

Strootman has had a good time in Eindhoven, but decided he wants to prove himself in a better league, his advisor Chiel Dekker has said.

If an agreement is able to be reached with a potentially interested club, PSV will allow Kevin to leave in January.

United have an enviable four-strong attack having added 24m Robin van Persie in the summer to the Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez trio.

However, there are worries beginning to surface as to whether Hernandez is going to cut it despite the Mexicans initial impact two years ago in his debut campaign.

United continue to have an eye of Borussia Dortmunds 25m-rated Robert Lewandowski, wholl be in action against England tonight in Warsaw. There was considerable interest in the 24-year-old Pole during the summer but the Germans managed to hold onto him having lost Shinji Kagawa to the Reds.

Lewandowski said: I havent got plans to change clubs. But British football is fast and hard. For sure it would be interesting. Maybe one day.

Fergie watched the striker in Champions League action recently for Dortmund against City at the Etihad and though his January transfer business has generally been rare over the years, the Reds boss could well be active this time around.
