Alex Ferguson hails 'fantastic' Michael Owen

Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to razor sharp Michael Owen last night after the Reds strikers brace dumped Leeds out of the Carling Cup.

It was the 31-year-olds first competitive start since he scored against Blackpool on the final day of last season.

Michaels finishing was fantastic, said the United boss after the 3-0 success at Elland Road put the Reds into round four. His goal ratio is unbelievable. We are very pleased with him. Unfortunately for us he has had one or two injuries. But with me having Rooney, Berbatov and Hernandez he is not getting the games he deserves and thats also unfortunate.

The first half performance was tremendous by us. The movement off the ball and our possession was very good. In the second half Leeds were very determined and kept trying a trying.

Ferguson gave a first team debut start for Manchester defender Zeki Fryers and brought Paul Pogba on at half time and gave a late senior debut as well to Larnell Cole.

Young Fryers did very well and was not fazed by it, added Sir Alex. The atmosphere at Elland Road is hostile and he coped very well. Paul Pogba had a good 45 minutes. Larnell Cole is very young but it is good for them to get a taste of what the first team is like.

It is great for the young players to understand the club and see their temperament on these nights. The young lads did really well. It was a great experience for them.

Owen himself admitted he got the Reds off the a flyer in Yorkshire with a scuffed effort!

My first goal was a miss hit but the second I caught it as sweet as I can hit them, he said. It is nice to come in and score. Getting goals is what I have been all about down the years but I am always trying now to help the kids and be an example to them.

I am still only! 31 and I have a good few years left in me yet. The pressure is on when you get into this side because you dont get many chances so when you get picked you have to perform or you wont see the pitch for another couple of months.

It is nice to know I can still get out there and contribute.
