Celebratory avalanche causes Gremio fans to fall from the stands

A joyous moment quickly became scary after Elano scored an important equalizer for Gremio in the second leg of their Copa Libertadores first-stage tie against LDU Quito. Gremio lost the first leg 1-0, so when they finally scored in the 61st minute of the second leg to pull even with a tremendous goal from Elano (video below), the fans in that end of the stadium did their signature "avalanche" celebration where they all rush forward.

If that sounds like a dangerous move, especially in light of the numerous stadium disasters around the world that have resulted many, many deaths by crushing, this incident proved those fears to be justifiable. The avalanche caused a railing at the bottom of the stand to break, sending fans tumbling down onto pitch. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt, but at least eight fans received medical treatment and two women were taken by ambulance to the emergency room according to Globo.

Gremio players told fans to get back as emergency personnel tended to the injured. The match did resume though, and Gremio ended up winning in a penalty shootout to reach the second stage of the tournament.

Here's Elano's goal...
