Sir Alex Ferguson buoyed by best buy of season
Sir Alex Ferguson looks on as goal machine Robin van Persie (inset) is mobbed by team-mates
United and City are the big hitters on this weekends Super Sunday title card. That will be hurting Liverpool and Arsenal.
They wont be too happy to be regarded as the underdogs in TV clashes where in the past theyve been used to being among the top draws for the audience.
And that is the one thing that I think United in particular will have to be wary of at Old Trafford.
The clash of the two Reds has always been so eagerly anticipated because for so long the pair were going at it hammer and tongue at the top of the Premier League.
Its still a classic fixture but it is hard to build it up as it used to be.
Liverpools fall from grace sees them 21 points behind United in eighth place. That will be so painful for them at Anfield. But there is one way to ease that agony and that is to win at Old Trafford.
Theyll be looking at Sunday as an opportunity to rocket confidence and for Rodgers revolution to gain more momentum.
Liverpool are a work in progress. We beat them 2-1 at Anfield in September when new manager Brendan Rodgers was still getting his feet under the table but you can see some signs now that his ideas are getting through.
If they can create an upset on Sunday then it will give his leadership and programme going forward new impetus.
And thats why this is as tough a match for United as any of the title ding-dongs in the past. Rodgers has made a good signing in Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea.
Theyve been in desperate need of someone who can help ease the goal burden placed on Luis Suarez shoulders.
If Sturridge is half the success Robin van Persie has been for United then theyll! be doin g cartwheels at Anfield.
The Dutchman has been absolutely superb for the Reds. It was an expensive purchase but I dont see how anyone can challenge him as the signing of the season.
The 24m looks money well spent now, considering what Sir Alex Ferguson has got in return.
RVP would have been forgiven if it had taken him a few months to settle into his new environment but hes not needed any settling in period whatsoever.
From minute one, he has been an outstanding capture and has made such a difference to United.
It is difficult to say much more about him other than drool over the fact he is such a classy player.
He is everything you want in a striker. His equaliser at West Ham in the FA Cup last Saturday was just pure quality. Uniteds gain has certainly been Arsenals loss. When they lost Van Persie to Old Trafford in the summer, I am sure there was a collective groan at the Emirates.
They could probably foresee what was coming and, to be honest, I am just not sure what to make of them any more. The Gunners have one or two outstanding players but as a team they are well short of what theyve been in the past.
I dont think they are up to the task this season of challenging to be in the top four.
I dont think theyll make the Champions League spot this time around. This weekend Arsenals weakness is not good for United because I can see City beating them.
The Blues have not been consistent and they will be looking now to build up a head of steam like United have.
Once you get into New Year, suddenly weeks and matches start rattling by and you cannot afford little slips here and there any more.
United have the deserved bonus of starting 2013 with a seven-point cushion.
If the results were to go right for the Reds on Sunday then it would be a 10-point gap and that would be formidable.
But I dont think it is going to happen. I th! ink the status quo will be maintained and it will still be a seven-point advantage.
Victories for both the Manchester clubs in Super Sunday is my prediction.
SCORE PREDICTIONS:
United 2 Liverpool 0,
Arsenal 0 City 1.
