Tennis balls and toilet paper cant keep Montpellier from first Ligue 1 title

PSG beat Lorient on the final day of the Ligue 1 season, which meant Montpellier had to win or draw against last-place Auxerre to win their first top-flight title in the club's history.

In front of a bitter crowd in Auxerre, that task become much more difficult than it first seemed when the home side went up 1-0 in the 20th minute. John Utaka equalized 12 minutes later, putting it at 1-1 at halftime, but in the second half, the Auxerre fans disregarded's Montpellier's title pursuit and decided try and make the day about their frustrations about being relegated.

The match was delayed for 15 minutes when fans threw dozens of toilet paper rolls and tennis balls onto the pitch and after it resumed, it was delayed for another 20 minutes when they threw flares. This prompted stadium staff to forcibly evacuate an entire stand in order to prevent any further issues and once the troublemakers were gone, Utaka scored again in the 78th minute to seal the title for Montpellier.

So the Carlo Ancelotti coached PSG side, backed by hundreds of millions of euros from the Qatar Investment Authority, failed in their bid for the title. Which means they will probably be making a few more footballers very, very rich this summer.
