Sir Alex Ferguson closes on Borussia Dortmund ace Shinji Kagawa - and wants his teammate Robert Lewandowski too

Sir Alex Ferguson is close to a deal for Shinji Kagawa
Sir Alex Ferguson is homing in on the first part of a potential double raid on Borussia Dortmund.

The United manager is close to a deal for 7m-rated Shinji Kagawa and has already made verbal contact with the Japanese goalscoring midfielder.

And Fergie is also targeting Kagawas Dortmund team-mate Robert Lewandowski who would cost a further 10m.

The German double-winners are adamant the Polish striker will not be allowed to leave, though the player has dropped a heavy hint that he is ready to quit the club along with Kagawa.

Fergie made a dash to Berlin to run the rule over the pair in the German Cup final on the eve of Uniteds Premier League finale at Sunderland.

It was a fruitful mission with both 23-year-olds confirming their potential.

Kagawa opened the scoring in the 5-2 win over Champions League finalists Bayern Munich and the 6ft Polish star Lewandowski sealed the German double for the champions with a hat-trick.

Kagawa, a sensation in Germany after signing two years ago for a bargain 300,000 from Japanese second division side Cerezo Osaka, revealed he had spoken to Fergie after turning down a contract extension at Dortmund.

It was good to meet and actually talk to him. He had some nice things to say to me, said Kagawa.

Manchester United chief David Gill sounds a warning to Manchester City

I want to go to a team where it will be challenging for me. It would be nice if I end up playing in the Premier League.

Lewandowski has set the German domestic scene alight this term by plundering 30 goals and being named as the Bundesliga Player of the Year.

Dortmund have told Lewandowski he will be staying but the player is not convinced.

His agent, Maik Barthel said: We acknowledge the interest of Manchester United.

I cannot confirm discussions about the financial terms. We respect the decision of BVB not to sell Robert.

However, with Bayern also keen, the player added: I do not know what will happen in two months.

Ive also thought, What more can I accomplish with Dortmund? Difficult.
