Mixed reception for Manchester United fan plans

Manchester United supporters fear for the atmosphere at Old Trafford if plans to move away fans get the go ahead.

United conducted an experiment during Sundays Premier League clash with Aston Villa, moving visiting fans to the third tier of the Sir Alex Ferguson stand from the south east quadrant where they are usually based.

The club says it has received overwhelming support for the idea, but there have been some complaints from season ticket holders who will be moved.

The initial reaction following Sundays match, which United won 4-0, was of a reduction in the atmosphere because Villa fans were further removed from the action.

Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters Trust, said: We are conducting a survey, which will take to the club, raising any concerns from fans.

One thing we are hearing is that it detracts from the atmosphere.

Another concern is that away fans will be above home fans and what will happen against sides that United have a fiercer rivalry with?

But a lot of fans are in support of a singing section and one suggestion is that it could be where the away fans are now.

It needs proper consultation with the people affected.

A United spokesman said further meetings to discuss the success of the proposals would take place.
