Roberto Mancini had been at the City helm for exactly a month when Manchester United visited Eastlands for Sir Alex Ferguson's first meeting with the Italian. However, it was former United frontman Carlos Tevez who made the headlines. Ryan Giggs gave United the lead on 17 minutes, but a controversial penalty decision by referee Mike Dean gave Tevez the chance to equalise just before the break. The Argentinian then headed in Vincent Kompany's cross from six yards, and celebrated a few feet from his former boss.

Manchester City had Tevez to thank for very nearly taking the tie into extra time in the return leg at Old Trafford. In a match that saw Craig Bellamy apparently hit on the head with a coin down at the corner flag, second-half goals from Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick gave Manchester United the lead. Tevez's audacious backheel goal on 76 minutes took the tie to 3-3 but Wayne Rooney popped up at the end of a Giggs cross in stoppage time to power United into the final.

City were looking to step up their claims for a top-four finish in the Barclays Premier League, but Manchester United's hunt for t! he title saw another nail-biting affair at Eastlands. Both sides missed golden chances to settle the game in normal time, with Rooney and Tevez among the guilty parties. But it was Scholes, fresh from signing a new deal at Old Trafford, who gave Sir Alex's side the win with a stoppage-time header.

Mancini's first full season in charge saw City once again vie for Champions League qualification from the start. However, the first Manchester derby of the season was a dour affair at Eastlands, with both sides equal on chances but unable to find the finishing touch. Dimitar Berbatov provided some entertainment with an overhead kick that tested City keeper Joe Hart, but despite the draw, United extended their unbeaten Premier League start to 12 games.

The return fixture of the 2011 season provided one of the most dramatic winners in Premier League history courtesy of Rooney. Nani had given United the lead before David Silva equalised for City. It was patience well rewarded for the United supporters on 78 minutes. Nani's cross from the right deflected off a City head and despite having to adjust himself at the last minute, Rooney produced a superb overhead kick to beat Hart.

It was Wembley's first Manchester derby that saw Mancini secure the chance for City's first major silverware since the 1976 League Cup. United wasted their early dominance and City recovered as Yaya Toure capitalised on a mistake by Carrick to slot past Edwin van der Sar. Scholes was sent off late on for a rash challenge on Pablo Zabaleta.

Manchester City 2 Manchester United 3 (Community Shield, August 7, 2011)

United were still reeling from their! Champio ns League loss to Barcelona at Wembley in May, when they faced City for the Community Shield. Two first-half goals from Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko respectively had given City plenty of hope for a victorious start to Mancini's second full season in charge. However, United fought back through Chris Smalling and Nani, before the Portuguese fired home from close range in stoppage time to settle yet another enthralling derby.

There were fireworks from Mario Balotelli, both on and off the pitch, as the Italian opened the scoring in United's worst home defeat since 1955. A second-half red card for United defender Johnny Evans opened the floodgates as Balotelli grabbed a second and Sergio Aguero added another. Darren Fletcher attempted a revival of sorts with a goal on 81 minutes, but Edin Dzeko put paid to those hopes with a brace either side of David Silva's 90th-minute goal, as City went five points clear at the top of the league.

Manchester City 2 Manchester City 3 (FA Cup third round, January 8, 2012)

FA Cup holders City were knocked out of the FA Cup by their neighbours in another tempestuous affair at Eastlands. Kompany found himself sent off for a two-footed challenge not long after Rooney had put the visitors ahead. Danny Welbeck and Rooney then made it a 3-0 half-time score, before Aleksandar Kolarov curled in a free-kick. Sergio Aguero's 65th-minute strike made it a tense finish for both sides, but United hung on in the end.
