United march on in FA Youth Cup
Manchester Unitedbooked their place in the last sixteen of FA Youth Cup with a 1-0 winbut it was never an easy task against a West Ham side that pushed them all the way.
Football is invariably the winner when these sides meet, no matter what the level, and it was no different on this chilly East End evening at Upton Park.
United edged a tight contest in the first half with Paul Pogba, John Cofie and Larnell Cole all testing Hammers keeper Sam Cowler.
The Reds certainly looked the more likely to find the net and in the 35th minute the breakthrough arrived.
Cole hit a shot from the edge of the area, which Cowler could only block, and the ball fell to William Keane, who accepted the chance with relish. The Hammers pulled out all the stops in search of an equaliser after break and they should have levelled through Sebastian Lletget 15 minutes from time but he pulled his shot wide of Sam Johnstones goal.
United will now face Grimsby Town or Newcastle United at home in the fifth round.
UNITED: Johnstone, M Keane, Blackett, Thorpe, Fornasier, Tunnicliffe, Cole, Pogba, Cofie, W Keane, van Velzen (Fryers 85).
Subs not used: Jacob, Lingard, Massacci, Hendrie.
Attendance: 1,405
