England lose on penalties (of course)

France knocked England out of the Women's World Cup on penalties in their gritty quarterfinal because whatever non-existent force oversees penalty shootouts clearly hates all England teams, regardless of gender.

Despite France getting off 29 more shots (but only eight on target, compared to England's four on target, according to Opta), England scored first with a lovely move from Jill Scott in the 59th minute. France's Elise Bussaglia finally struck back in the 87th minute to send it to extra time. Neither team could get a winner there, though England were at a disadvantage with Kelly Smith injured and all subs already used, so it went to the dreaded penalties. And in a situation Chelsea fans have spent the last three years trying to forget, England defender and captain Faye White stepped up to the spot with the chance to put away the winner. Instead, she pinged it off the bar and France would win the shootout 4-3.

Perhaps this conversation shouldn't have happened...
