Darren Fletcher completes 90-minute run out for Manchester United U-21s

Manchester United's Darren Fletcher
Darren Fletcher came through an encouraging 90-minute run-out for United's second eleven as they opened the Barclays Under-21 Premier League with a narrow victory at Weaver Stadium, Nantwich.

The Scottish international midfield star, who is slowly easing his way back after being side-lined for more nine months with ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition, was included as an over-age player in Warren Joyce's side.

And he delighted the watching Reds' supporters with a typically lively and mobile display at the heart of United's midfield.

Central defender Scott Wootton scored the winner with clever curling shot, in the 8th minute, but the Reds were forced to battle all the way to hang on to their lead against a lively Potters' side who failed to convert a series of decent chances.

UNITED: Johnstone, M Keane, Blackett, Fletcher, Thorpe, Wootton, Cole, Tunnicliffe, King (Lawrence 89), Petrucci (Fornasier 68), Lingard (Veseli 90). Not used: Gollini, Januzaj
