Manchester United's Danny Welbeck will learn from Robin van Persie

Danny Welbeck is still in Sir Alex Fergusons plans despite the signing of Robin van Persie
Danny Welbeck is going to be a fantastic striker says Sir Alex Ferguson but it wont stop him from probably starting on the bench at Everton tonight.

Fergie is expected to open the campaign with a new-look attack made up of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney the two leading hitmen in the Premier League last season.

And it is Welbeck who is expected to make way for what is the most lethal strike partnership in English football.

It will be the first slight dip on the Mancunians career after what has been a meteoric rise through the Old Trafford ranks.

He kicked off 2009 as a reserve playing for Uniteds second team at Bolton. In 2010 he was a substitute for Sunderland against Birmingham as he began his loan spell at the Stadium of Light.

Then last year he started his first ever Premier League campaign up front with Rooney in the 2-1 win against West Brom at the Hawthorns.

Despite scoring 12 goals last season and becoming an England hit for new manager Roy Hodgson at Euro 2012, the 21-year-old now faces the prospect of trying to force his way back into the side ahead of either Rooney or Uniteds new 24m man Van Persie.

But United boss Fergie believes Welbeck will blossom rather than be burdened as a result of the Dutchmans arrival.

You always learn from great players. If you remember what Cantona did for all the young players. Without question he was a great teacher for them. Danny will welcome that, said Ferguson.

Danny is 22 in November but there is a progress there and the progress is purely physical.

As we know he has had growth spurts for the last few years and has missed parts of the season because he gets litt! le niggl es because of it. He is still growing. He is going to be a big boy and he will learn but he wont play every week.

Fantastic

He will still get little strains every now and then but when he has completed growing and is 23-24 he will be a fantastic player.

He will learn from playing with Robin and Wayne Rooney and Chicharito. We have a great combination of strikers now and that has encouraged me.

It will be difficult for me but it is better that the whole team enjoys success because we have added another great player rather than them worrying if they are going to play or not.

They have to share in the way forward.

Meanwhile former United striker Michael Owen is still holding out hope of a future in the Premier League.

After being released by the Reds at the end of last season he has been linked with a host of clubs, with Stoke his most determined suitors. Im wanting to play and eager to start again, he said. I want to play in the best possible team. If it was local to my house, excellent. I want to play more often but thats not written in the contract.

I dont really want to play in the Championship, I know I can still play in the Premier League and can still score goals. Theres been interest from all corners of the Earth but my ideal is the Premier League, I want to play in the Premier League.
