Berba off? Valencia ready to pounce for Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov
Dimitar Berbatov
Dimitar Berbatov could be set for a January transfer window bolthole in Spain.
Manchester Uniteds 30.75m club record buy is slipping down the Reds striker pecking order and Valencia have noted his Old Trafford woe.
Twelve months ago, the Bulgarian had scored seven goals at this stage of the season from seven starts and two sub appearances.
However, after January, Javier Hernandez forged ahead as Sir Alex Fergusons No 1 pick with Wayne Rooney.
The 30-year-old remained as the clubs top goalscorer for the campaign but his season ended in misery.
He became a peripheral figure in the run-in to the record 19th title and he was then completely overlooked for the 17 on duty in the Champions League final against Barcelona.
Despite the Wembley snub Berbatov pledged that he wanted to remain at United.
But his situation among Fergies attack has become no better this term. He has started just the Carling Cup match at Leeds and the Premier League game at Stoke. His other four appearances have all been as a sub.
In contrast to a year ago, he has yet to score this season, leaving him a frustrated figure on the bench.
Whereas it was Hernandez last season who usurped him, this term it is 20-year-old Danny Welbeck who has leap-frogged Berbatov.
Last Saturday against Norwich, when the Rooney and Hernandez ticket was drawing a blank, it was Mancunian Welbeck to whom Ferguson turned to.
The England squad member answered with a goal in the 2-0 victory and it left Berbatov as an unused sub.
The United boss continues to stress the value of the squad system and that Berbatov understands the position but if his inactivity stretches into the depths of winter his patience will be tested.
Val! encia ar e said to be keen on a possible move to La Liga for him in January. Berbatov will be out of contract at Old Trafford next summer and a free agent, so a mid-season transfer fee might be welcome.
Should United sell Berbatov? Have your say.
