One to watch: Striker Will Keane gains Paul Scholes plaudits
PROSPECT: Will Keane
Paul Scholes has tipped Manchester Uniteds Stockport-born striker Will Keane as a Reds striker of the future after likening him to a Dutch Master.
The 18-year-old scored eight goals on the way to Uniteds Academy side winning the FA Youth Cup last season and 17 from 15 starts overall.
On top of that he bagged six in seven starts in the reserves.
Since retiring at the end of last season Scholes, a former Youth Cup winner himself, has been working as a coach on Sir Alex Fergusons staff and has been impressed by the newest generation of Reds.
"I think Will Keane has the capability to be a top-class centre-forward," said Scholes.
"He's one of the lads I've been working with. He was always someone I liked when I was watching the youth teams.
"He's just got a presence about him, he's a strong lad and has great feet the ability to strike a ball. The kind of things Ruud van Nistelrooy had.
And if Keane is a new Van Nistelrooy, then another of the 2011 Youth Cup-winning side has similarities to a player who has just left Manchester again to try his hand in London ex-Blues winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Mancunian Larnell Cole came on as a sub against Leeds at Elland Road last month in the Carling Cup and Scholes added: He looks a great prospect.
He's very small but he's a very clever footballer. He's similar to Shaun Wright-Phillips but a player who can play inside a bit better than Shaun.
Shaun's an out and out wide-man but Larnell can play in a three in midfield."
United boss Fergie blooded Manchester-born defender Zeki Fryers against Leeds in his starting XI and, as well as introducing Cole, he also promoted Paul Pogba as a second-half sub in Yorkshire.
Now the young Red! s will h ave their eyes on Fergies selection for the next potential senior opportunity when they travel to League Two side Aldershot Town in the fourth round of the competition on October 25.
Which young United stars do you expect to make the grade? Have your say.
