Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck make England squad - but no place for Rio Ferdinand

Danny Welbeck

Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck were among the Manchester United players named in Fabio Capellos England squad for the Euro 2012 showdown with Montenegro on Friday but there was no place for Rio Ferdinand.

Jones and Welbeck have both impressed during the Reds barnstorming start to the defence of their Premier League crown and the duo had been widely tipped for selection.

Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney made up a four-man Reds contingent but, after starting Uniteds recent games against Stoke and Basle, questions will be raised about the extent to which Ferdinand now figures in Capellos plans.

Gary Cahill started alongside skipper John Terry for the recent matches against Bulgaria and Wales and the Bolton man retains his place.

With Chris Smalling, like Tom Cleverley and Robert Green, ruled out through injury, a vacancy exists at right-back and the recalled Kyle Walker didnt do his chances of keeping out Citys Micah Richards any harm by lashing home the winner for Tottenham in front of Capello in Sundays north London derby.

Alongside Richards, City stars Joe Hart, Gareth Barry and Adam Johnson were all selected.

Bobby Zamora and Scott Carson were recalled to the 24-man squad, but there was no place for Steven Gerrard.

The Three Lions need a draw in Podgorica on Friday to book their place at next summers European Championship finals.
