Manchester United man Phil Jones can lead England - Micah Richards

LEADER: Phil Jones
Micah Richards has tipped ManchesterUnited defender Phil Jones to become England captain in the future.

The pair are in contention to fill the right-back role in Montenegro, when England only require a point to seal their place at Euro 2012.

However, Jones preferred role is in central defence, even if his ability to operate in front of the back four has drawn comparisons with Reds legend Duncan Edwards.

But City rival Richards knows that on club duty, Jones has to be the enemy.

However, he has no doubts the 19-year-old will eventually become a Three Lions leader.

Phil Jones is going to be England captain one day, Richards declared.

He's got everything: pace, reads the game well, is good on the ball.

He's at the right club as well because Sir Alex Ferguson promotes young players.

It is something of a surprise that Richards has only won a single cap under current national coach Fabio Capello, having been a constant presence under predecessor Steve McClaren.

There have been suggestions in the past that Richards is not too enamoured with the treatment he has received from Fabio Capello.

However, the truth is not quite as straightforward.

What he does acknowledge is the competition for that right-back role is not quite as weak as many would claim.

People always say there arent many right-backs, Richards added.

But Chris Smalling is doing a good job for Manchester United. I rate Glen Johnson and Kyle Walkers been doing very well.

I think I'm twice the player I was when I made my England debut at 19.

Theres no reason I can't get in there but its about biding my time.
