Strikers give Fergie a nudge

Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen have given Sir Alex Ferguson food for thought ahead of Uniteds Premier League game at Everton on Saturday, writes Stuart Mathieson.

The duo set up a comfortable 3-0 Carling Cup fourth round win at Aldershot last night.

And with all Fergusons starting XI in the 6-1 Old Trafford demolition by City at home nursing mental scars in Manchester, the Anglo-Bulgarian spearhead gave the Old Trafford boss a timely reminder of what they can do.

Berbatov opened the scoring with his first goal since April and Owen added to his brace against Leeds at Elland Road in the previous round.

Antonio Valencia added a third in the second half but Fergie admitted his attacking duo had effectively put their names in the frame for Goodison.

The players will always give me a nudge, said Ferguson.

We have a fantastic squad and that is why we have played these players against Aldershot.

They need the matches. They have not had many first-team games because the consistency of the team has been very good. I havent needed to make many changes.

The two strikers were absolutely brilliant. Michael Owen has a fantastic record, every time he plays he scores.

You cannot ignore that. He is a fantastic professional. He just has that knack. He is an amazing player.

Dimitar Berbatov has scored a tremendous goal and played some great football. It is good for them.

Captain Nemanja Vidic completed his first 90 minutes for the Reds since his calf injury on the opening day at West Brom and midfielder Tom Cleverley returned following his ankle ligament damage against Bolton last month.

We had Tom Cleverley back and that is a good thing for us because he is an outstanding footballer, added Fergie.

Vida has got another 90 minutes and he needed it. Early on until he got his breathing going he was feeling it.

After the trauma of the de! rby Ferg uson was delighted his side displayed a professional approach at the Recreation Ground against the League Two side.

Aldershot fought really hard, they should take a lot of credit, he said.

They never stopped running and never stopped pressing the ball. They put a good shift in.

We showed our quality and should have scored a few more at the end of the match when they tired. But I am satisfied. In a cup tie the important thing is to win the game and get into the next round.

We showed professionalism and discipline. It is a good habit to have in these types of matches.

The FA have still to receive UEFAs full reasons for the three-match international ban imposed on Wayne Rooney but will decide this week whether to appeal against the sanction.

UEFA have until tomorrow to provide the FA with the reasoned decisions for the ban, imposed on the United striker for kicking Miodrag Dzudovoic during the 2-2 draw with Montenegro.
