Chelsea sack Carlo Ancelotti, release farcical statement
With their season-ending loss barely even qualifying as a memory, Chelsea wasted no time in sacking Double winner Carlo Ancelotti after just two seasons of service. Though Chelsea won nothing this season (well, aside from the reserve league title) and looked toothless far too often, as a Chelsea fan, Ancelotti's dismissal seems typically rash considering all he accomplished in his first year on the job. But, that didn't stop the club from getting rid of him and firing off a silly statement to announce the decision.
From Chelsea's official site:
Chelsea Football Club can confirm that Carlo Ancelotti parted company with the club today (Sunday, 22 May).
The owner and board would like to thank Carlo for his contribution and achievements since taking over as manager in July 2009, which included winning the Double for the first time in the club's history.
And what better way to thank him than to give him the boot mere hours after the final game of the season, a year after winning that Double? I guess having him mauled by a dog was deemed a smidge too extreme.
However, this season's performances have fallen short of expectations and the club feels the time is right to make this change ahead of next season's preparations.
Carlo will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge, where he will be given the reception and respect his position in our history deserves.
Yes, he'll always be welcome...just not as the club's manager. Oh! , and yo u might not want to talk about giving him "respect" in a statement about sacking him a year after winning the Double.
Chelsea's long-term football objectives and ambitions remain unchanged and we will now be concentrating all our efforts on identifying a new manager.
There will be no further comment until that appointment is made.
If you're wondering, "long-term" means "the next eight months." And when that period is over, expect to see this same statement published again, but with a different name in place of Carlo's.
