Man Utd star Own Goal comes through with West Brom winner

Ashley Young takes credit for Own Goal's finishing ability.

After the first half hour of their season opener against West Brom, Manchester United looked like they would steamroll their way to another victory as they look to make quick worth of that 20th title. An early goal from Wayne Rooney put them up 1-0 and everything was going to plan for Alex Ferguson. But then Shane Long exposed the danger of relying on a 20-year-old goalkeeper starting his first season in the Premier League. David De Gea let the low shot slip under him to put the score even at 1-1.

Seeing De Gea's understandably frayed nerves overcome him, the home fans took to shouting "shoot!" every time West Brom had the ball (I'm sure a few even yelled it before throw-ins). Man United appeared to be in danger of dropping points to lowly West Brom as they were unable to mount much of an attack throughout most of the second half. But then their most faithful servant once again stepped up when it mattered most.

Ashley Young's attempt to cross after darting in from the side of the box was deflected by West Brom defender Steven Reid into the back of the net for the winner (video here). Young celebrated like he had just scored his first goal for his new club, while Own Goal quietly hung back and let the others celebrate as his initials were put up on the scoreboard.

Own Goal was Man United's leading scorer in February of last season w! hen he s cored his 10th of year against Aston Villa to push him ahead of Dimitar Berbatov, who would eventually take the Golden Boot.

Some pundits have said that Man United will sorely miss the retired pair of Paul Scholes and Edwin van der Sar, but as long as they have their old talisman Own Goal, they'll be just fine.
