Sir Alex Ferguson backs under-Fire David De Gea but hails fellow new boy as Manchester United open with win
David de Gea endured a torrid Premier League debut for United at West Brom but was backed by his Reds boss
Battered Spaniard David de Gea can take heart from Peter Schmeichels baptism in England in 1991.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is backing his 18.3m new number one to soak up his physical welcome to the Premier League at the Hawthorns and use it as part of his English education.
The 20-year-old, signed from Atletico Madrid as Edwin van der Sars replacement, made a hash of West Broms equaliser on his Reds competitive debut and he also had to face up to Albions strong-arm tactics.
Davids concentration cost him the goal. It was a slack goal to lose. But it is an experience for him, said Sir Alex.
You saw the abuse he got in the second-half. I couldnt believe he never got a free-kick. The aerial assault on him was ridiculous.
In the second-half he was targeted a bit.
Not necessarily physically but there were a lot of challengers that should have been free-kicks but the referee decided to play on.
It was the same when Peter Schmeichel came. His first few games against Leeds and Wimbledon, they punished him. They gave him a real torrid time.
David is young. He will learn. He will come through.
Fergie was happier with his other newcomer, Ashley Young, whose late cross-cum-shot was deflected in for Uniteds winner.
Ashley Young has done very well, added the United manager.
He gives us composure on the ball. He is not just a crosser.
He can also play very well, as he did for the first goal. We are very pleased with him.
What do you think? Have your say.
