Messi's brilliance, Arsenal's zero shots, 'joke' ref help Barca advance
Barcelona beat Arsenal 20-0 in shots, 76%-24% in possession (according to Opta) and 3-1 in actual goals over their Champions League second leg match to advance on a 4-3 aggregate score. Cesc Febragas launched half-joking theories about his allegiances when he set up Lionel Messi's superb first goal (above). Sergio Busquets showed Arsenal how to score against his own team with an own goal in the 53rd minute.
But the moment that will have Arsenal forever convinced they were robbed (despite not having a single shot the entire match) was when Robin van Persie was shown a second yellow and sent off for time wasting by shooting one second after the ref blew his whistle. From that point, Barcelona would score twice more to advance and van Persie would invoke the spirit of Didier Drogba for his post-match monologue. He told Sky Sports:
"It had a big influence and in my opinion it was a total joke, the sending off. Because how can I hear his whistle with 95,000 people jumping up? How can I hear that, for God's sake? Please explain me that. [...]
One second from his whistle to my shot is a joke. And he's been bad all evening. He's been a joke all evening, whistling against us. I don't know why he's here tonight, honestly. I think he's a joke."
And that's how you get a UEFA ban.
